11 Forgotten Laws – Part III – Law of Compensation

IT WOULD SEEM THAT THE LAW OF COMPENSATION SHOULD BE THE LAW EVERYONE UNDERSTANDS BEST BUT THAT DOES NOT SEEM TO BE THE CASE. LET’S HAVE A CLOSER LOOK IN CASE YOU MISSED SOMETHING. I KNOW I DID, HENCE THIS NEW ARTICLE

The Law of Compensation has 3 distinct elements.

  • Your Thoughts
  • Your Actions
  • Leveraging the Law of Compensation

1. YOUR THOUGHTS

The Law of Compensation lies primarily in the way you think.  I think you would understand that when you plant a seed, it must be the right seed. If you plant pumpkin seeds and you should expect pumpkins, not potatoes. Yet everyday, people think negative things and expect positive outcomes. How often do you think negative thoughts? How often do you think positive thoughts? The Law of Compensation requires you start with positive thoughts. If you were to continually think positive, eventually the negative thoughts would be flushed from your mind. There would be no room for the negative.

These 3 questions may indicate a negative mindset

  • Do you expect SOMETHING FOR NOTHING?
  • Do you look for things that are called cheap?
  • Do you HATE TO PAY YOUR BILLS?

All the above questions indicate a mindset of scarcity and lack. Long term these are destructive to your outcome. Before you can become better, you must think better.

2. YOUR ACTIONS

You cannot act unless you have thought about it first. If you think a certain way, you act a certain way. You are the result of your dominant thoughts. These thoughts lead to action.

The Law of Compensation requires that you act appropriately. When you provide a greater number of positive actions, you receive a greater value in compensation. You always get compensated for the value of work you provide.

The following is from the 11 Forgotten Laws

“When you perform tasks to the very best of your ability, or when you are thorough in your work and do it well, you infallibly bring out the best that is in you….And the Law is that he who becomes better will attract the better and be given the greater things to do.”

By acting in a positive manner and creating more value, your compensation must increase.

3. LEVERAGING THE LAW OF COMPENSATION

Finally, you need to understand how to leverage your work. You may work hard. You may even get results but are you leveraging the following principle?

THE LAW OF COMPENSATION IS

  • The demand for the job you do
  • Your ability to do a job
  • The difficulty in replacing you

Let’s break this down.

THE DEMAND FOR THE JOB YOU DO – Basically, if there is no demand for your job, it wouldn’t exist

YOUR ABILITY TO DO A JOB – This is key. You MUST be able to DO YOUR JOB WELL. It is based on the 2 elements I mentioned earlier

THE DIFFICULTY IN REPLACING YOU – If you are easy to replace, your compensation may be lower. However, IF YOU DO YOUR JOB WELL, you are too valuable to your organization and cannot be replace.

Take a look at the above principle. The one thing you can influence AND the most important part of that process is YOUR ABILITY TO DO A JOB. The demand is outside of your control and your ability determines how hard it is to replace you.

So in everything you do, if you are not giving value, you will not be compensated. Simple. What are you giving today?
