THERE SEEMS TO BE AN AWFUL LOT OF SELF HELP GURUS OUT THERE TRYING TO HELP PEOPLE BY GETTING OVER THE PAST. THE FACT IS IT DOESN’T WORK. IN FACT, IT MAKES THINGS WORSE
THE PAST IS THE PAST
Why are we so compelled to look at our past to fix the future? We look at our troubled childhood or troubled relationships with parents etc. What is it about the past that can possibly fix the future? Think about it. If we look for negative things we will ALWAYS find one. Some will be obvious, some won’t. It is so easy to find something that troubled us in the past and use it as an excuse for our present dilema. I really don’t understand why we do this. Our present problem is not in the past. It is something we are not doing NOW that determines a DIFFERENT FUTURE. It has nothing to do with the past. Tony Robbins says “The past does not equal the future”. The past may explain the present but it can’t fix the future.
HOW TO FIX YOUR FUTURE
Imagine a hot air balloon. How does it rise? With hot air. In life, we need to fill our hot air balloon first in order to rise. In life, our hot air are things that inspire, excite and motivate us. They are our good thoughts and good actions. The more hot air we have the faster we rise.
ONLY AT THIS POINT, we will suddenly realise we hit a plateau, we no longer rise. This is because we have not untied ourselves from the tether in the ground. This may be a limiting belief or action that is holding us back. Once we realise this, we can cut that tether and continue to rise. We may find another tether holding us back but that is fine. We can tackle these one at a time.
The Challenge Of The Past
The problem is we try and cut ALL our tethers before we even get off the ground. This has MANY DISADVANTAGES.
- We don’t know which one to start to cut first
- We may have an infinite number of tethers, we could be on the ground forever
- We don’t know which one is the shortest and most limiting tether on the ground
- We get so worn out cutting tethers, we don’t even get off the ground
The Potential Of The Future
My suggestion is fill your balloon with hot air. When you stop cut the shortest tether so we rise again. Repeat. It’s that SIMPLE.
The ONLY way to progress is act now. Don’t wait. ACT. When we reach our height limit then we adjust. Don’t let tethers stop you from even starting.
