I first met Bob and the family when I was dating his sister Helen. I immediately liked his mother, Marguerite; and Helen’s brother, Allan. I felt connected right away. It took a little longer to connect to Bob
Even at that young age, Bob was the member of the family who was always looking on the other side of the fence. Without permission from his mother, and at the age of 17, Bob joined the Canadian Navy. While Bob was in the navy, Helen and I got married.
Bob has never taken the easy path in anything he did, nor has he expected any help. When he sets out do something, he is always prepared to go it alone – never waiting for someone to help or save him.
Bob surprised everyone when he came home for our wedding. What he never mentioned to anyone at the time was that he couldn’t really afford to travel back to his ship in Halifax after the wedding in Toronto.
Soon after the ceremony ended, Bob set out for Halifax- hitch hiking, with just a chocolate bar in his pocket. Without money for food, and nowhere to stay, he spent his first night on the road sheltered from the rain in a phone booth in Quebec.
Bob never let his circumstances prevent him from attending his sister’s wedding. He never whined about it, nor did he expect financial help. He did what he had to do to be at the wedding, and return to his ship.
Bob’s tenacity to achieve what he wants has never let up. He chooses to control his circumstances; he doesn’t let circumstances control him. Watching Bob’s dedication to his objectives, I’ve learned firsthand the depth of what he means when he says “Don’t let anything sway you from your goal”.
