IN LIFE WE HAVE ALL SORTS OF EXCUSES AND DIVERSIONS
TO KEEP US DISTRACTED. BUT LIFE IS ABOUT FINDING
THE SIMPLICITY. IF YOU CAN’T FIND INSPIRATION AFTER
WATCHING PAUL POTTS, MAYBE THIS WILL HELP.
As a life coach I have heard all sorts of stories
about why things can’t be done. Things like “That
doesn’t apply to me” or “You don’t understand, I
CAN’T do that” or “You aren’t in my position”.
The fact is I was. I was at the end of my rope. I
was starting to get physical illness to work. I
have been broke and I have been put in very
precarious and uncomfortable positions of
“responsibility”.
In my experience, the longer the story the more
“evidence” has been built around a simple truth.
You aren’t achieving and there is a reason. I’m
not saying it isn’t a good reason .However, if
you see an obstacle and you don’t find a way,
you are creating an excuse. Because inspired
people have no obstacles. They may have diversions
or delays but never obstacle. Check out my Team
Hoyt video or my Paul Potts video to see how ANY
obstacle can be overcome.
So what do you do?
1. Firstly, decide whether what you want is REALLY
what YOU want. It’s not a social responsibility,
family responsibility or self imposed “just because”
responsibility. A good way to decide that is ask
“If I didn’t do this for 10 years, 20 years etc, what
would the result be? Would anyone die or irreparably
suffer?”
2. If it IS what you should do, get leverage. In
other words do the inverse of above. What will happen
if you DON’T do something straight away? Can it wait
any longer?
3. Decide on what needs to be done and list them.
Break it down to smaller tasks. Stack rank them and
ONLY do the most important thing first. No excuses,
just the first. When it is done, do the second most
important thing.
4. Decide that there is NOTHING more important
than the first thing on the list. Tell people why if you
need to. Post it somewhere so you don’t forget, like
the fridge or your bathroom mirror. Remind
yourself that you need to do this. Even better, find a
buddy who will hold you accountable.
My latest story is a very, very good dancer…with
one leg. I don’t think ANYONE has an excuse to not
do the most important thing in their life.
